Bloggers Quilt Festival - Traveling Medallion

If you are visiting my blog because of the Blogger's Quilt Festival Spring 2012, welcome! This blog is very, very new to me and I'm still working out the kinks but I am thrilled to be here.
This is a Group Quilt, Bed size, and it was hand quilted.

Amy's Creative Side

I think this quilt has an interesting story. This quilt is recently finished, although it was pieced in the early 1990s.

Back then, I was joined in a Progressive Border Swap through AOL's quilting message boards. I jumped in with 5 other ladies and we each made a center block. Around the circle they traveled, being added to by each quilter. There were pretty strict guidelines for each round - triangles, curves, turn on point and even applique. (A first for me!)  It is a full size quilt measuring 80 inches square.

Unfortunately, I have lost the names of most of the quilters who participated in this quilt, so if it looks familiar to you, I'd love to hear from you!! I wanted this to be hand quilted since it is a traditional quilt - but into the closet it went waiting for its chance to be worked on. And it waited... and it waited. Shortly after the top was made, my husband and I moved, and immediately thereafter, I got pregnant with twins. Suffice it to say that many, many years have gone by since I have done any more quilting - the twins are about to turn 13!

Years went by and every so often I'd pull it out and think to myself, "Someday..." Finally I got off my butt and took it to Lancaster and found an Amish quilter to finish it for me. As you can see, she did a beautiful job and I am excited to have it finally complete!

This quilt and its (long) journey have inspired me to begin quilting again!

I have just finished a new quilt top and started this blog to keep track of my work. The internet has always been my "bee" and this quilt is a perfect example of the wonderful things that can happen through online friendships and the community spirit of quilters.

  1. Beautiful. Great story, too! Just goes to show that it's never too late to finish a quilt.

  3. I bet you are so happy to have it quilted and "useable" instead of in the closet! I have a couple of tops languishing for want of hand quilting and I've been intending to use the same solution you did. Thanks for the reminder!

    1. Believe me, it took way too long to decide to go this route. I am so much happier having it done so we can enjoy it. Go for it!

  4. A beautiful quilt, with an interesting story! The colours are so pretty and specially I like that the cream has a slight lemon tone that sets off the blues so subtly. It must be wonderful to have it on the bed and snuggle under after waiting so long! :-)

    1. It is quite buttery in reality which I think makes it nice! Yes, a quilt should be used, right?

  8. A friend once suggested a group quilt with much these same rules but I was not brave enough to get involved. Yours turned out so nicely.
ps.. I'm beginning to notice that the blogs with this "prove you're not a robot" code are getting fewer comments. I hate trying to figure out these wonky words myself and changed my comment area (well, had my son do it) as a result. Thus far I have not had any bad effect but I had e-mail conversations with some of my blogging friends before doing it and picking an alternative.

  11. I love that story! I love when quilts have awesome stories to go with them. And it is lovely, too. I love the quarter dresdens especially.

    1. I got a really big boost when I took it to be quilted! The woman was genuinely excited about the quilt, and it made me realize once again how special it is. Thanks for visiting!

    1. That's very, very kind of you to say. If I can re-construct the names of the ladies who participated in this quilt, I just might enter it somewhere. Glad you visited!
